I'll be visiting Paris in early July and am definitely looking forward to skating with you on the Friday Night Skate!

I am looking for some additonal advice though. I want get out and put some kilometres on my skates in the mornings. I normally skate 20k-30k on paths near my home in Minnesota, USA.

Are there places I can get some serious distances on my own around Paris?

I have not chosen my hotel yet so I could theoretically be located anywhere. Is it legal/safe/advisable to skate on the streets?

How about in the parks?

Thanks!

OK, so I'll try to answer all your questions one by one.

If you want to skate with us on Friday night, it's ok you just have to come on time with your skates.

If you want to cover some kilometers/miles, you can do it in the "Bois de Boulogne" or the "Bois de Vincennes" even in Paris or by doing a turn out of Paris.

About the legal part of the roller skate practice in Paris and the region :
- In Paris, if you're in a group composed by one to nineteen persons, you have to skate on the sidewalk,
- In Paris, if you're in a group composed by more than nineteen persons you have to skate on the road and respect the highway code,
- Out of Paris, it could be different in every town.
So my advice is, if you're not certain skate on the sidewalk. If you skate on the road ninety nine time on a hundred the police don't say anything, and the rest of the time they just tell you to go on the sidewalk.

See ya !!

Hi!
This is not quite correct.
You are not allowed to skate on the road at all, a skater is considered a pedestrian by the law.
However, groups of less than 20 people who skate on the sidewalk and respect the traffic rules (stop at red lights etc.) are tolerated.
In Paris, the two big skates (Friday night and Sunday afternoon) are the only ones that have an authorisation to use the road, and the exact route has to be authorised by Police Headquarters beforehand.
Exceptional events can be organised but have to be likewise authorised by the same authorities.

Now if you're on your own, just be careful and respect traffic rules. If you go out in the early morning (also depending on your definition of "early" happy.gif ) you should find the streets rather quiet (and the sidewalks too).

Other people will doubtless reply before long and give you insightful tips, but I had to make sure you knew what the law is.
Feel free to ask more questions.
And of course enjoy your stay in Paris when you're coming!

If all you need is to skate for a long time undisturbed you may go to the hippodrome de Longchamp and skate around it (clockwise). It is mostly used as a cycling track but of you are fast enough you might not be yelled at happy.gif

huh.gif Vraiment!?!

My familiarity with Paris is limited and my Greek is even worse, but isn't a "hippodrome" meant for horse racing not for cycling?

Surely you are having a joke?

It may be a little more of a challenge skating on grass or dirt than I am ready for.

Of course, the idea is NOT to skate on the horse racing track itself. There is a cycling track that goes all around it (outside the fences, not on the grounds). It has the favors of semi-pro cyclists all clad in spandex on carbon bikes, and they are somewhat assertive of their territory. Hobbyist-skaters are unwelcome, you have to sustain good speeds and show dedication to gain acceptance. Beware in particular of width restrictions at a couple of places, where packs of cyclists roaming at 60kph will show no mercy if you're in the way.
